Get Connected! Camp Zambia

In 2008, a team of women from North America traveled to Zambia to help host the first ever Get Connected! Camp in Zambia (see video).

During the summer of 2010, two GEMS interns, along with Lusaka Area Coordinator, Clara Phiri, hosted the third annual camp at Jesus Army Church.

“This year’s Get Connected! Camp turned out far better than we could have imagined,” said Mary, one of the interns. “We felt a huge sense of accomplishment coming out of it because of the response we got from all of the girls was that this was ‘the best GEMS camp yet!’”

“There were many challenges,” Mary added, “but everything smoothed itself out and the girls went home encouraged. The best memories I have of camp all involve our CITs (counselors-in-training).  They served as the TLCs (counselors) at camp this year for the first time and they absolutely blew everyone away with their leadership and administrative skills used to run the camp. From registration, to creative movement, to crafts, to small groups, and praise time, they really were the glue that held camp together. They solved problems and kept all the girls excited to be there, even the advanced girls.

Get Connected Camp is vital to GEMS in Zambia because it brings the girls together.  Camp is one of the only venues that this fellowship takes place between these young girls who love Jesus. They don't have many opportunities besides club meetings on Saturdays to hang out with other girls who want to live their lives acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly.”
