What You Need:
• An old Golden book. You can find these at used bookstores and garage sales
• An Exacto knife (ask an adult for help with this)
• Two pieces of oilcloth (or similar fabric) with the following dimensions: 5" x 22", 6" x 20"
• Cardboard rectangle: 6 1/2" x 3"
• Hole punch
• Two 14" pieces of ribbon
• Glue (we used Liquid Stitch)
• Scissors

Step 1:

Ask an adult to use the Exacto knife to cut off the front and back covers of the Golden book. Make sure you leave the binding intact.

Step 2:

Glue the cardboard rectangle to the backside center of the 5-inch x 22-inch oilcloth. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 3:

Fold over the 1-inch remaining flap at the top and bottom of the cardboard rectangle. Apply glue to the folded, front-side 1-inch piece of cloth.

Step 4:

Place the front and back book covers tightly against the rectangle. Glue the 1-inch flap to the backside of each cover. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 5:

Cut a 1-inch flap around all four sides.

Step 6:

Fold the flaps from top to bottom to create a crease.

Step 7:

Working with one flap at a time, place glue along the entire flap.

Step 8:

Carefully glue the flap to the book cover. Allow the glue to dry. Repeat with the three remaining flaps.

Step 9:

Place glue on the bottom rectangle inside of the bag.

Step 10:

Fold the 6-inch x 20-inch rectangle of oilcloth in half with the backside facing out. Slip the cloth into the bag and working from the center, press the cloth into the glue.

Step 11:

Once the glue on the bottom of the bag has dried, place glue on the inside ‘front’ and ‘back’ of the bag. Press the cloth into the glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 12:

Punch two holes at the top of the front and back of the bag. String the ribbon through the holes and tie a knot on each end.
