What You Need:

• An old sweater
• Scissors
• One 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of notebook paper
• Needle
• Thread in a color that coordinates with your sweater
• Yarn (six strands, each four feet long) in a coordinating color
• Safety pin
• One button (optional)

Step 1:
Lay the sweater out on a flat surface.

Step 2:
Lay the sheet of notebook paper on top of the sweater in the bottom left hand corner. Cut around the outside edges of the paper. Be sure to cut through both layers of the sweater.

Step 3:
You may have enough of your sweater left over to make more friendship purses, just like this picture shows.

Step 4:
Take the right sides of the pieces that you cut and put them together. Sew around the outside edge with a needle and coordinating color thread. IMPORTANT: Don’t sew around the top edge!

Step 5:
Turn your purse right side out. Then, take the six strands of yarn and braid them together into a shoulder strap. HINT: Tie a knot in one end, put a safety pin through it, and pin the strands to a blanket on your bed. Braid the long strands and tie a knot on the other end.

Step 6:
Sew the strap to each side of the purse. Optional: If you have a button, sew it onto the middle of the purse and cut a slip in the other side.
