Lace Up
The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.
Psalm 37:31, TNIV
Dad and Mom had a pre-Kindergarten rule for their children: you may not start school unless you know how to tie your shoes! Velcro shoes were not available in my day so there was no quick-n-easy Plan B to fall back on. I can still remember sitting on the kitchen floor, intent on making a knot, bunny ears, and a one-loop wrap. Whether we’re in Kindergarten or beyond, tight shoelaces keep us from tripping, stumbling, and having our feet slip off the path.
In the same way, Micah Road walkers need to lace up – not with shoelaces, but with Scripture! God tells us in His Word that we need His law in our hearts to keep us from slipping off the path. The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip (Psalm 37:31). These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts (Deuteronomy 6:6). Fix these words of mine in your hearts (Deuteronomy 11:18a).
When you read, study, meditate, memorize, fix, and lace up His commands in your heart, you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path (Proverbs 2:9). Storing up God’s Word in our hearts will light the way for the path we should walk (Psalm 119:105) and cause us to hate every wrong path that we approach (Psalm 119:128).
That’s great news for travelers! It’s news that is skewed and misinterpreted if we think that lacing up with Scripture guarantees a trouble-free trip.
The Micah Road is not nicely paved – it’s filled with ruts and potholes. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! [Your feet will not slip!] I have overcome the world (John 16:33).
The Micah Road is not a comfortable, carefree ride – it’s filled with trouble, hardship, famine, nakedness, danger and sword. Be encouraged! None of these things will keep your feet from slipping and separating you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35-39).
The Micah Road is not laid under a tunnel that shelters us from sin and temptation. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. [Do not dismay! Your feet will not slip!] God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Faith Step
Lace up for the journey! Each time you slip your shoes on and off today, recite a Scripture verse.
[God’s Word] should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. Follow its precepts and it will lead you to Calvary, to the empty tomb, to a resurrected life in Christ; yes, to glory itself, for eternity.
